Target Audience

For our music video I have been looking into the audience of the band. I have used to different methods to gain this information. Firstly I went to see the band live at one of their gig in Norwich. From this I could see the types of audience that attend their gigs. Also I have created a questionnaire which I have given out to many different people within the question. This is qualitative research and the two make together make for strong evidence. I included a question asking people weather they have heard of the band. From this I can see the type of audience who have and haven’t and therefore create a better understanding about the audiences.

We went to see the band perform live in Norwich and we thought they were really good. We particularly were looking at the different audiences; mostly we saw that the audience was young 15-25. From looking at how they were dressed you could see this type of music didn’t really influence there clothing or appearance but there were a few who had similar clothing to the band. This is classed as an Indie-look, messy hair with a big fringe with a plain t-shirt or shirt. This was interesting to see and it was at least a quarter of the audience. Overall it does show that many people are influenced by the music they listen to.

In the questionnaire I asked whether they have heard of the band. From this I can see the type of audience who have and haven’t and therefore create a better understanding about the audiences. I found the types of audience who had heard of the band where predominantly younger, in the ‘16-25’ category. Both genders had similar results on their knowledge of the band which is good for the band and gives them a wider audience.

The song we have chosen to promote by the band will typically be aimed at males. The title ‘Boy in Motion’ immediately suggests that and the video content we wish to include is stereotypically male driven. However just because it is stereotypically male it will not cut down the audience. I may even strengthen the female audiences because of its male dominance.

Initial ideas for our music video gave us skateboarding so with this in my questionnaire I asked whether people would enjoy seeing skateboarding in a music video. My results were heavily popular to the idea which has therefore influenced our decision. Many females asking the question were keen to the idea and therefore strengthening the point above attracting the point above

Norwich is a great place for promoting bands and it has lots of venues from very small, to very large where bands can perform. I saw the band at ‘The Brickmakers’ which is a small venue designed for mainly local upcoming bands. Many of the nights are free entry and are usually very busy which shows the love of music in Norwich. The area also has many Radio stations starting at small radio station such as ‘Future Radio’ which are perfect for promoting local bands. The Internet is also a great place to promote a band with sites such as ‘Youtube’ and ‘Myspace’

Research into Music Videos

After researching unsigned bands our group came across the song 'Boys in motion', a song by the band 'Blighters'.

We already had ideas in our head of producing a film using complex editing to make it unique and stand out. Stop motion is something I have done before and have found great fun in doing so. From looking at other stop motion music videos such as Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie it creates a good effect.

This is a great example of the animation of stop motion. The whole video is made of photos and is a very complex and professional piece. This video has influenced us to include stop motion within our music video. It has also us given ideas and motivation to achieve a great video. Realistically we know we cannot match the level of ability but it is something we can aim at.

The video is include just 3 shots which is actually very common to this sort of animation. Changing to different angles makes the whole process a lot more complicated. The video is very impressive which is roughly made up of 3225 still photos. These dreamy visuals amaze audiences and keeps them watching. The piece is a folk song so the relaxing and dream-like video matches the genre. Animation is often used in Folk music videos which shows animation is a generic signifier of the Folk genre.

I video includes a 'journey' that a woman takes without leaving her bed, which could symbolise a dream that the audience can see visually themselves. There is no real meaning to the journey that she takes but more surreal and unique. She skips through clouds which in this case are pillows and swims with fish which are socks. Using simple bedroom essentials to create an amazing piece with such variety has a clever contrasting affect

The title Boys in Motion gave us the idea of the video including skateboarding. Boys and skateboarding have always been a common stereotype and we wish to enhance this idea.

This is a video by Lostprophets which is majorly performances based. It has cuts to skateboarding shots throughout which fit to the genre and pace of the track. This is similar to what we want to achieve with our production. The skateboarding shots use a lot of slow motion which is effective to the music and has a great contrast with the fast pace shots shown when the band perform.

The video is on the rooftop of a skyscraper which seems to be a popular location for music videos. Its used to suggest popularity and being 'at the top'. It is also a great location because the shots show only the sky and tops of other buildings which gives the audiences main focus to the band. This generic location has been used by other bands of a similar genre such as Linkin Park

Here is Linkin Park in their video for 'In The End' on a rooftop for their performance based music video.

The shots used throughout the video show you that the music and the genre have that 'skater' scene as there is clips of skateboarding throughout. This is a cool image and is often idolised by many people. The performance is a to a live audience and the reaction of the crowd also tell you about the music. There are many crowd shots and there is a lot of 'moshing' and crowd surfing which gives the band a very 'rocky' outlook. These generic 'signifiers' confirm the generic blueprint over all. Mike Piscitelli, the director wanted got the bands fans to come along and be in the music video so it would give a real overlook on the band rather than a forced one. It therefore shows the real generic features through the audiences rather than being planned.

There is no narrative structure in the video. The skateboarding is simply performance stunts to look good rather than to have a storyline. They use shots where the band is in the background of the skateboarding to blend the two together nicely.

The visuals fit well with the music, especially when looking into the tempo changes. When the music it is at a fast pace the shots are quick and short when the piece mellows out and is a slower the shots are longer and panning is used. The skateboarding shots work in the same way, there are slow motion shots when the music is slow and fast pace shots when the music is at a high tempo.

The lighting is natural throughout the video, as it is filmed during day light no added light is needed. There is a shot where the sun is used very well in the background (below) which creates a good effect and adds variety. It shows a good use of using natural resources which are already there.

Both of these videos have influenced our production by giving us ideas for structure and shots as well as the motivation to produce a good quality video.

Music Video Analysis

Maximo Park - Our Velocity

The music video features a performance based video with no storyline which is unconventional. Almost the whole of the film is shot in one shot rather than the generic quick flashes of shots used in most modern music videos. The video is simple and relies heavily on good editing.
The idea of the video is to have the band playing multiple times all in one shot. This is done by shooting the band playing in different positions and then merging the images together. The lighting constantly changes using many different colours. This creates a disco effect which references 'dancing' This goes with the song well. The videos in the past by the same band have been all performance based as well.

The video has a busy mise-en-scene which matches the song as it is has a great structure a layers. This is also matches by the 'busy' lighting which produces a very colourful scenery.

The trend is set by the lead singer who has a smart and intelligent look which audiences could aspire to and this has a good look on the band. There are many close ups and low angle shots of the lead singer Paul Smith who is given that star image. This is enhanced by his clothing, he wears a smart shirt and blazer with a top hat. This gives him the main focus as he is represented as important as he is the lead singer. The black clothing worn by the band contrasts with the light background of white and the light colours that are in the video.

The band is given the image of being good performers and from this I feel people would want to see them live. This way it promotes the band and could increase there ticket sales. The band in the past have mainly used performance based videos but have occasionally used a storyline. The image of the band is therefore kept the same.

Asking a few people on there comments on the video many had different opinions. It was all agreed that it was a simple video but many thought it was effective. I also had 2 people that found it uninteresting. The trend set by the lead singer is a smart and intelligent look which audiences could aspire to and has a good look on the band.

The video has featured on many popular music video channels such as '4music', ' TMF' and 'Q' this has given the band good publicity and promotes the song well. This shows they are a mainstream band and are therfore popular.

The editing gives the video complexity and without the new technologies the music video would not have been as effective. Editing software has developed massively in the last 10 years. The video just being a performance would always be very simple but with the added effects it makes it more interesting.

Overall the video is simple but effective and has helped me produce ideas for our music video by using multiple shots of a character.

Recent Planning Notes and Ideas

- Added more about the location according to comment
Group
Myself

Ryan

Song
'Boys in Motion' by 'Blighters'

Basics
Live performance on the jump box with speakers, mics, drums, guitar. Hopefully with audience
We really want to do it at dusk with spotlights but we are thinking it is too ambitious.

Stop Motion Story line/ Fills

Early evening - Sunset

Location - Skatepark

House and park - stop motion

Camera Angles - Rotating - 360 shots. Lots of High and low angles.

Lighting - Camping gas lights, Torches

Props and Equipment - Instruments, Leads, Mic, Step ladder for filming, Tripod, Skateboard

Photos of location

Hethersett skatepark - Perfect stage effect - This will be our centre shot getting low and high angles of the band.
The smooth surface of the place also allows for good filming on skateboards.

We can use the surrounding ramps to get the high angle shots that we need and also it is where some of the lighting will be shone from.
These angles show the skatepark to be a small eccientrically rural amateur park which almost looks like its in the middle of a field which has sheep in. This adds humour to the whole place.
Looking at professional music videos which include skateboarding, you see urban indoor parks but we think with effective lighting we can pull off the park to look good.

Possible use for stunts such as jumping over the drummer while he plays the drums on a skateboard to add humour to the piece.

Camera Shots and Lighting

- Added part about Low key lighting effect and shadow effects

This is the surrounding scenary from the box where the band will play

Camera Shots

Straight High Angle

This is the main shot that will be used - straight on, looking at the front of the band. We may look to use a step ladder to gain extra height.
360 Shot

Here is a diagram of the 360 Shot

Here is a 360 shot of the jump box where the band will be performing. Using the skateboards we can make the shots smooth and we can use this method for other tracking shots. After researching performance aspects in music videos such as Lostporphets - Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja we found the video uses alot of moving shorts such as the 360 shot

We will use the ramps to create a high angle shot which is also where the light is coming from. This will create a good effect

Lighting

Lighting comes from either side of the box hoping to create a spotlight crossover effect - This is ideal for the characteristics of the video as the box is like a stage. The shadows created will look great and we are hoping to have some some shots which include low-key lighting which we wish to use and having this type of lighting allows us to do this.

After experimenting with our lighting the we found the big torches using a beam of light is created which gives us great ideas for shots including

Here is a photo of the effect of low key lighting total darkness in the background and partial lighting to the cat. By using this effect we can create a sense of importance towards an object or person. We may use this effect on the instruments as well as the band members

Two gaslights on the box - This should almost be the main part of the lighting and the low lighting should give off a great affect. After little experiments with the lights we have seen that they create great all round shadow effects. From these shadows we can then produce shots of the shadows which would be good for 'fill ins'

Casting and Costumes

-Added more on the reasons for costumes

The band has 3 members and we have carefully casted 3 people who we feel fit the piece and we know will be reliable through the production of the piece.

Below left
Lead Singer - Owen Taylor

Owen has been scouted to be a
model and he has the autentic look
of a front man. A good friend who
will be reliable.

Above Right
Bass Guitar
- Ryan Hayward
Casting within the group, Ryan
will be there anyway so he will be reliable

Above Left
Drums - Jake Mardell Again casting
within the group and I can play the
instrument

Above Right
Skaters - Toby Roper, Jake Mardell

We chose Toby because his abilities on a skateboard are good. He also has many very impressive tricks. As a good friend of mine i know he will be reliable

Here is a video of Toby skateboarding

Costumes

Lead Singer - Quite Smart - Blazer and jeans

The lead singer will be the smartest which connotes importance. This will contrast with the other band members and especially the skateboarder. Furthermore, as Owen is the smartest out of the 3 piece, it represents that he is the lead and the front man of the group.

Bassist and Drummer - Shirt and Jeans

Looking at photos of the band and also seeing them live, the band like to wear shirts. We have decided to mirror this image to match the genre of the music. The shirts represents a smarter look to the band, while the jeans show a more casual side. This can also be related to the target audience, which by looking at the audience at the gig, wore mostly jeans and casual clothing.

Skaters - Hoody and Jeans

Skaters - Hoody and Jeans (Stereotypical 'skater' clothing)
Below are the stereotypical look of a skater. We have decided to use the baggy jeans and hoody as it helps to make the production look authentic. Furthermore, the dress sense of these characters is something that the target audience can relate to. The look of the skaters also connotes their way of life. Their clothing isn't very flashy or high maintenance, which is reflected in their life style. We are also going to get him to wear a hat (below). This is a 'cool' trend at the moment and therefore matches the 'cool' skateboarding image

Intial Ideas and Treatment

The Band: We have chosen the band Blighters. The song we are using is 'Boys in Motion', as me, Ryan and Tyrrell all love the song we thought it would be easier and more enjoyable to think of some great ideas. From listening to the song we all immediately had great ideas

Video plan

We decided that a live performance of the band would be a good idea. We have chosen the skate park at Hethersett, as this is a good size for the performance and as all of us live in Hethersett, makes sense. We want the band to perform on the jump box (the stage like object with 3 ramps and the flight of stairs for you non-skateboarders) with speakers, mics, drums and guitar. Furthermore, we will add shots of skaters using the park and add them to the video. We plan to flick in between the skateboarding with the performance of the band and use slow motion to emphasise the tricks. We would like an audience, however, this may be a step to far logistically with the numbers that would be needed. We believe that at dusk would be the best time to do it, with spotlights (Gas lights and high-powered torches) lighting up jump box from the ground up. This should create a great effect and an almost stage atmosphere.

As well as the music performance, we want to incorporate Stop Motion. We will create little Story line's to fill out the video and break up the live shots. We have already experimented with this idea, as the video with Jake in the bed and the Post-it notes show. We believe that this would make our music video something special and different from the rest of the class.

When filming at the skatepark location, we will be following the narrative structure of song. As shown in are annotated lyrics sheet, we intend to use lines of the song and film them accordingly. Lines such as "Better get used to being lonely", we would shoot the lead skater on his own at the empty skatepark. Furthermore, the 'soldier' in this song will be the skateboarder.

Contrast with the real band

We are hoping to keep the characteristics of the band such a clothing and personalities. As a group we went to see the band live in Norwich and saw how they were and this will help us to stick to the characteristics of their genre.

Boys in Motion Lyrics

The War has been won
The soldier must go on
In search of
New life, new work
You wear my baton
And you have been warned
Like the soldier I
must move on

The boys in motion
Fight against me girl
This place like heaven x2

Girls smell so sweet
Or so I remember
So why do you
Make it so hard to fall in love
I guess there's no one good for me
Better get used to being lonely
Don’t ever say
Fall in love!!!

The boys in motion
Way to kiss me girl
This place like heaven x2

If its too small read below
Blighters -
Hi guys,
No worries on using the song, would like to see the finished product!
Cheers Jamie

Us -

Hi Im using an old account just to send you a quick message. We are looking to use the song 'Boys in motion' as part of our year 13 media studies coursework for our A levels. This involves creating a music video and flyer to promote an unsigned band. We really love your music and recently went to your gig in norwich and really enojoyed it. This does not involve you in anyway but we just need your permission to use the song to promote your band. Cheers Jake and Ryan

Practice Shots

A quick practice shot using stop motion on a time lapse camera.

We used a simple idea of bed covers sliding back by themselves and is a similar style to the one in Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie. This magical and mysterious effect juxtaposes with the plain and simple environment in which surrounds the bed.

A quick experiment with 'postit' notes and getting letters to appear. This has helped with future plans for the music video because i know on ways i can improve on it.
Boys in Motion is the name of our song but during the music video we may use the lyrics of the song in a similar way.

Questionnaire

I made a questionnaire which I put up on a social networking site, Facebook. This way I could have all my answers digitally and it was easier for people to fill in, so it made it easier for everyone. By doing primary research I was able to gather accurate results which I knew, were correct therefore giving me relevant data.

Audience Research

I have created a questionnaire to look deeper into audiences of the music industry and how they consume and find out about new music. I have also made this to ask audiences on how they feel about our ideas towards the music video. I posted my questionnaire out on a social networking site I use, ‘Facebook’. I posted it to friends with a mixture of age and gender, mostly around 15-20. I only gave it to this age range because the questions are suited to this age range. I decided to do a questionnaire because it is easier to assess the points made and I can show the results in graphs.

Here are my results, I have not included all the results from my questionnaire but I have included the ones I feel are relevant.

I started by asking people what their favourite genres were to give me an idea of what audiences most like.

The results didn’t surprise me as I notice these popular genres are favoured among people I know. Rock and Indie are the two popular genres and our music production features a band with a similar style for this.

Within the group we had ideas instantly from listening to the song of having skateboarding in the music video as well as performance from the band. In my questionnaire I asked if people would enjoy watching skateboarding in a music video and my results were fourteen to three in favour of it. I have researched into music videos that have included skateboarding in a music video such as ‘Shinobi Vs Dragon’ By Lostprohets and ‘Fat Lip’ by Sum 41. These two videos use skateboarding to altar the pace of the video and this creates a good affect. Watching these videos influenced our idea to use skateboarding and it shows how popular it is in a music video from my results.

As you can see over three quarters of the participants would enjoy watching skateboarding in a music video. After looking deeper at this particular question I noticed that stereotypically that only boys would enjoy skateboarding but looking into my questionnaire there were many girls that also answered yes to this question.

I then looked into the consumption of music throughout audiences. I asked how they accessed their music.

There are many ways to do this legal or illegal, streaming or downloading. Illegal downloading is becoming a serious issue in the music industry and my results show support this claim. Six out of seventeen said they illegal download which is the outlier in the results but this stat could be more as many people are embarrassed or afraid to admit that they illegal download. Therefore this percentage could be a lot higher. Looking at the other ways. I looked deeper into the consumption between audiences and I looked at the consumption within certain genres. Comparing people favourite genres and how they consumed music was interesting. The people that selected ‘Dance and Drum and Bass’ as their favourite type of genres mostly had put down they acquire their music through either vinyl or CD which is of course legal. Rock and Indie fans however mostly download illegally. This may be the way these genres are published and advertised and also the way the genres are listened to. Dance and drum and bass tends to be ‘mixed’ by Dj’s. Since vinyl piracy is quite sparse the main option is to buy vinyl and this is why the vinyl industry isn’t under threat at the moment. Rock and Indie however is mostly accessed for use on Mp3 players and computers so the acquiring of the music isn’t important. This is why recent schemes like ‘Spotify’ have been introduced.

I then looked at how audiences found out about new/ local bands, this was important so I could see how people possibly found out about ‘Blighters’.

Gigs

As you can see gigs and the Internet are the main sources of information for new and local bands. Norwich has great venues for small bands to promote themselves and this could be why ‘gigs’ is such a high flyer in my results. The Internet is great in the modern world to find out anything you want so it is no wonder is popular for information. Websites such as SOFACOM help promote all Norwich bands, big and small which is updated regularly. There are also huge networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook where bands usually have a page. The Internet and Gigs also come together with the website Norfolk Gigs which gives information on Where? When? Who? This makes it easy for locals to find out about new bands. Aswell as this there are small Norwich radio stations such as Future Radio which has shows on to promote local Norwich Bands. This is another great opportunity for bands to get their music recognised.

As I attend many gigs I have begun to notice that appearance varies between genres and so I asked audiences whether they felt music influences their appearance.

Nearly half felt it had no affect on them and they look how they want to look. But over half said that it did make a difference. This topic is another where the answers may not always be true. Many of the audiences may not admit or realise that their music is affecting the appearance and this can happen very often. It is good to see that many people have admitted that it affects them whether that be only a small amount or massively. Again I noticed a pattern between those whose favourite genres were rock and indie. Those who selected rock and indie as their favourite genre also said that music influences their appearance. Whereas dance and drum and bass fans said it mainly didn't.

Evaluate
After looking into my results I have found patterns within them. I have found people often turn to illegal downloading because they can’t get the music anywhere else. People have also stated that the smaller bands that may be unsigned are hard to purchase legally. This again causes them to download on sites such as Lime wire.Another pattern I found in my answers interested me and it was something I had looked into before. The answer to the question ‘How do you get your music?’ was answered simply, “I don’t, I use Spotify”. This interested me because Spotify has been labelled as a piracy solver. If people are using Spotify to listen to their music mostly people find they no longer need to buy music. So yes it stops people downloading illegally but it also stops people from going out and purchasing the CD’s or downloading off Itunes. From these results it shows that Spotify is having a bad effect on the music industry.

Looking at how vinyl is a popular way of listening to music because of the latest trends and crazes. My results showed me that people who buy vinyl don’t download illegally. There are ways of getting music to vinyl illegally but this is a long process including an expensive piece of equipment. It happens, but quite rarely and the vinyl business is at a healthy state at the moment.

Overall I have noticed a link between consumption and influence of music between genres. There are common stereotypes of indie kids and rockets and this shows through with my results on the influence. The consumption between genres also has a great pattern. The participants preferring dance and drum and bass, get their music legally through mostly CDs and vinyl this could be to do with the big DJing craze that is around . Most indie and rock fans just seem to want the music on the computer or Ipod for listening purposes only, so illegal downloading is easy and therefore occurs often.

Music Video Analysis

Pink – So What

This music video shows performance and action and includes major representational issues. The video is funny and is meant to make you laugh but is a childish video and some may not enojoy it. The video shows, ‘pink’, the artist causing trouble and disrupting the neighborhood. This goes against the stereotypes of woman but this is the representation the pink wants to get across to her audience. She wants to be known as ‘bad’ and this gives her a unique personality which can be helpful in the music industry.

The video includes shots of her cutting down a tree so it falls into a neighbour’s garden and the artist riding a lawn mower along the busy roads. The representation of a ‘Rockstar’ is made when she smashes a guitar on the floor and her ‘crazy’ road rages.

The video matches the lyrics of the song which are ‘so what I’m still a rockstar’ which helps the audience understand the lyrics more thus giving more enjoyment to the song. It also reminds people of her Rockstar image.

Asking amongst people I found many people enjoyed the video because they found it funny and entertaining. Everybody said they would watch it again and no one found anything offensive. This however is the results from teenagers and many adults could find some shots offensive such as the tree being cut down and when the artist strips on the red carpet.

I think this helps promote the track because people recognise the ‘rockstar’ image of Pink and she enhances this image throughout her video. A conventional Pink video includes violence and possibly offensive material 'Please don't leave me' and 'So What' both include violent and offensive material. She also usaully always has a performance based video which often contains a story that she features in

Overall this video gains the promotion of her song in the way she wishes. The artist has definatly shown that unique rockstar image which makes her different from the rest of the music industry. Adding humour to the video keeps the viewers watching and amused, therefore willing to watch it again. However Pink hasn't aimed her video at a wide audience and many people will find this childish and really not enjoy it.
