Music Video Analysis
Pink – So What
This music video shows performance and action and includes major representational issues. The video is funny and is meant to make you laugh but is a childish video and some may not enojoy it. The video shows, ‘pink’, the artist causing trouble and disrupting the neighborhood. This goes against the stereotypes of woman but this is the representation the pink wants to get across to her audience. She wants to be known as ‘bad’ and this gives her a unique personality which can be helpful in the music industry.
The video includes shots of her cutting down a tree so it falls into a neighbour’s garden and the artist riding a lawn mower along the busy roads. The representation of a ‘Rockstar’ is made when she smashes a guitar on the floor and her ‘crazy’ road rages.
The video matches the lyrics of the song which are ‘so what I’m still a rockstar’ which helps the audience understand the lyrics more thus giving more enjoyment to the song. It also reminds people of her Rockstar image.
Asking amongst people I found many people enjoyed the video because they found it funny and entertaining. Everybody said they would watch it again and no one found anything offensive. This however is the results from teenagers and many adults could find some shots offensive such as the tree being cut down and when the artist strips on the red carpet.
I think this helps promote the track because people recognise the ‘rockstar’ image of Pink and she enhances this image throughout her video. A conventional Pink video includes violence and possibly offensive material 'Please don't leave me' and 'So What' both include violent and offensive material. She also usaully always has a performance based video which often contains a story that she features in
Overall this video gains the promotion of her song in the way she wishes. The artist has definatly shown that unique rockstar image which makes her different from the rest of the music industry. Adding humour to the video keeps the viewers watching and amused, therefore willing to watch it again. However Pink hasn't aimed her video at a wide audience and many people will find this childish and really not enjoy it.
